About this project
بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
This is a Quarto book that aims to make Howell’s A Grammar of the Classical Arabic Language (Wikipedia entry) more navigable.
The original work was published from 1880–1911. The scanned PDFs are located at: https://archive.org/details/howellarabicgrammar2013.
For links to the individual sections, I build upon the work done by Aasim Iqbal (جزاه الله خيرًا) published on his site.
For an interesting read on Howell’s methodology vis-a-vis contemporary trends in the Western study of Arabic grammar, see:

Vernier,” in Documenter et décrire les langues d’Asie: Histoire et épistémologie. https://books.openedition.org/shesl/10369?lang=en
How to use this web-book
In order to use this web-book, first navigate to the chapter from the sidebar on the left. It will open a chapter page with two frames:
- The frame on the left is an embedded PDF of the combined table of contents (ToC).
- The frame on the right either:
- Opens that chapter, if it has only one section.
- Or it lists links to the sections contained in that chapter. Scroll through the ToC to determine your desired section number. And click on the link for your desired section number to open it in that frame. In order to go back to the clickable section list, click the back button on your browser.
Notes regarding the text
- Numbers in square brackets in running text, for example “[402]”, are a cross-reference to that section number.
- Howell’s own opinions are within brackets.
